Choosing a Dog Carrier
Whether travelling by car or by airline with a dog, it is important to find the very best dog carrier that is most suitable to make sure the dog is comfortable and safe for the duration of the trip.
A small or makeshift dog carrier might be fine for quick trips to the vet, but when travelling over longer distances something that is much sturdier should be used. A dog carrier is not just a bag, it is for transporting a live animal.
For travelling by air, choose an airline approved dog carrier to avoid any problems when you arrive at the airport with your dog carrier.
The dog carrier needs to be large enough for the dog to be comfortable. The dog must be able to stand and turn around easily. Check the maximum weight supported by the dog carrier. If the dog is too heavy then go for a larger sized dog carrier in order to keep your dog safe. Your dog should not hang out of the dog carrier.
Check that there is proper ventilation on all sides of the dog carrier and that the dog can maintain privacy when needed and make eye contact from inside the dog carrier.
Make sure that the latches and fastening devices are secure so that your dog cannot escape from the dog carrier. Some carriers may include a restraining mechanism to secure your dog in transit. Ensure that any external carrying straps on the dog carrier are strong and comfortable, some may be adjustable.
Some dog carriers may also be padded for the handler’s comfort. For smaller dogs a soft dog carrier may be most appropriate, for example when the dog carrier sits on the lap during a flight.
Check that the dog carrier is made of safe non-toxic materials and has no loose parts inside.
For longer journeys, make sure that the dog carrier has a suitable place for food and water. To keep your dog calm and relaxed during the journey, consider placing an item of clothing or the dog’s soft toy inside the dog carrier as it will have a familiar smell to them.
When positioning your dog carrier during a journey, ensure that it is on a flat level surface for your dog’s comfort.
Finally remember that a cardboard box is never a good idea for a dog carrier. It lacks ventilation, and has no structural integrity. Cutting holes in the box reduces whatever stability the box may have had originally. Please, instead buy a more appropriate and sturdy dog carrier.
